Survey: Norwegians divided over troops in Afghanistan
Jul 17, 2008, 10:21 GMT
Oslo - Norwegians appear divided over keeping Norwegian troops in Afghanistan, a survey published Thursday has found.
While 45 per cent oppose deploying the troops in Afghanistan, 42 per cent are in favour, the poll commissioned by public broadcaster NRK said.
The results suggest a shift in public opinion compared to a similar poll published in February, when 57 per cent of Norwegians polled by Norstat said Norway should take part in NATO-led operations in Afghanistan, while 32 per cent were against.
Researcher Henning Hogseth at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs said the drop could be linked to the fact that the general public have not seen 'concrete results' of the Norwegian presence, NRK said.
NATO-member Norway has contributed some 500 troops to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, ISAF.
The poll asked 930 people between June 4 and July 2 'should Norway have soldiers in Afghanistan.'
No margin of error was given in the results.
