Tibetans arrested after more anti-China demonstrations
Aug 10, 2008, 12:29 GMT
Kathmandu - Nepalese police on Sunday detained more than 250 Tibetan exiles after breaking up anti-China demonstrations in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.
The arrests came after hundreds of Tibetans tried to march on the Chinese embassy consular office in central Kathmandu for the third straight day coinciding with the Olympic Games in the Chinese capital Beijing.
'More than 250 Tibetan protestors were arrested from anti-China demonstrations,' Kathmandu district police said. 'We expect most to be released during Sunday night.'
Police stopped the demonstrators about 200 metres from the Chinese embassy building but arrested them when they tried to break police lines.
The demonstrators, including monks and nuns, were bundled into police trucks.
The Tibetan exiles have held almost daily protests around the Chinese embassy office since March 10, and have stepped up their activities in recent days.
On Friday, nearly 1,400 Tibetan exiles were arrested from the demonstration that the organisers said was aimed at drawing world attention to the plight of people in Chinese ruled Tibet.
Nearly 20,000 Tibetans in Nepal are classified as refugees and live mostly in Kathmandu and Pokhara in western Nepal.
Despite growing criticism, Nepal says it will not allow Tibetans to hold anti-China demonstrations saying it officially recognises Tibet as part of China.

Thankfully these thugs in Nepal were rounded up and taken to jail. They are not protesters but terrorists bent on violence.
The Chinese have brought peace and harmony to the Tibetan province of China after the Dalai Lama's failed uprising against the government he served. The Dalai Lama and his followers days of feudal torture and slavery thankfully are now over.
