Dec 2, 2008, 16:32 GMT
Dhaka - US Republican Senator and defeated presidential candidate John McCain arrived Tuesday night in Dhaka on an 11-hour visit to Bangladesh as part of a regional trip to Asia, officials confirmed.
Bangladesh's foreign affairs advisor, Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, received McCain at the Zia International Airport at 10:25 pm (16:25 GMT).
McCain is scheduled to attend a breakfast meeting hosted by the head of Bangladesh's interim government, Fakhruddin Ahmed at his official Jamuna residence before he leaves for Bhutanese capital Thimphu later in the morning, Chowdhury said.
Bangladesh's democratic outlook and upcoming elections will feature in the discussion, Chowdhury added.
The senator from Arizona, accompanied by Democratic senator Joseph Lieberman and Republican senator Lindsey Graham flew straight from Indian capital New Delhi.
