EU congratulates new Bangladesh government
Jan 9, 2009, 15:01 GMT
Brussels - The European Union on Friday hailed the formation of a new government in Bangladesh as a potential milestone in the country's development.
The EU 'congratulates Sheikh Hasina on her electoral victory and appointment as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and pays tribute to the people of Bangladesh for their commitment to the holding of democratic, multi-party elections,' a statement on behalf of the 27-member bloc released in Brussels said.
'The elections provide a basis for a new democratic development in Bangladesh. The EU ... hopes for a stable, correct and effective functioning of the newly-elected Parliament and Government that can start addressing core issues for Bangladesh's future,' the statement said.
In particular, the new administration should push forward reforms aimed at fighting corruption, boosting human rights and strengthening the independence of the judiciary, it said.
