Los Angeles - Even before director Danny Boyle received the Oscar award as best director for Slumdog Millionaire, the film had racked up a handful of awards in the ceremonies in Hollywood Sunday, including statues that went to Indian nationals who worked on the British-made film.
The award for best movie of 2008, for which the film is also a candidate, was yet to come.
Slumdog Millionaire, about the rise of a slum-dwelling Mumbai orphan to the final of India's most popular quiz show, took awards for best adapted screenplay, cinematography, sound mixing, original music score and individual song.
'I dedicate this award to my country,' said Resul Pookutty as he accepted the Oscar for best sound mixing. 'This is history being handed over.'
A. R. Rahman, who accepted awards for best original music score and the best song, Jai Ho, said he was 'excited and terrified.'
'The last time I felt that way was during my marriage.'
Saying the film showed the 'power of hope in our lives,' Rahman added: 'All my life, I've had the choice of hate and love and I chose love.'
He ended his acceptance speech with a phrase in the Tamil language which translated as 'God is great.'
