Five drown, nine go missing as boat capsizes in Pakistan
Apr 14, 2009, 12:02 GMT
Islamabad - Five people drowned and nine went missing Tuesday when a small boat capsized in eastern Pakistan, police said.
The boat carrying 18 people, including women and children, capsized while crossing the swollen Indus River near the town of Mianwali in Punjab province.
'Five bodies were fished out, but nine people were unaccounted for and feared dead,' local police chief Akbar Khan Niazi said. Four people swam to safety.
'High winds and strong waves apparently caused the accident,' Niazi said.
The boat was ferrying the group across the river for wheat harvesting.
