Norwegian officer killed in Afghan bomb attack, Oslo says

Oslo - A Norwegian officer was killed Friday by a roadside bomb in northern Afghanistan, Norway's defence forces, in a disclosure some hours after Afghan officials had reported a suicide attack but had spoken only of two wounded soldiers. The Norwegian military in Olso said the officer was flown by helicopter to the German field hospital in Mazar-e-Sharif where he was pronounced dead. Another Norwegian was in the same vehicle. A second vehicle with two Norwegians was also part of the patrol. Norwegian Defence Minister Anne-Grete Strom-Erichsen told reporters the vehicle was not armoured. Norway has some 585 troops in Afghanistan. Earlier, officials reported an attack by a suicide bomber against a convoy of NATO-led Norwegian forces Friday in northern Afghanistan. The officials said the bomber was killed while two soldiers were wounded. The bomber rammed his explosives-filled vehicle into the Norwegian convoy in the Takht Pul area of the relatively peaceful province of Balkh, said Abdul Raouf Taj, deputy provincial police chief. Two NATO vehicles were destroyed in the attack, he said. A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed that one of the ISAF's military convoys was attacked in Balkh but would not elaborate.
