Heavy rains kill 20 people across northern India

New Delhi - At least 20 people died in torrential rains and squalls that lashed India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, a news report said Monday. The deaths, caused when houses collapsed or trees and electrical poles fell on residents and their dwellings, occurred in various districts of Uttar Pradesh on the weekend, a report in The Hindu daily newspaper said. The latest cases brought the death toll to 50 in the heavy storms that lashed the state over the past fortnight. The monsoon season in northern India usually lasts from late June to October. Despite the rains, most of the major towns and cities in Uttar Pradesh continued to experience high temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. Hottest among the cities in India's northern region was Amritsar in the state of Punjab the temperatures reached 44.4 degrees.
