Car bomb kills four in southern Pakistan
Jun 30, 2009, 8:57 GMT
Islamabad - A car bomb in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province Tuesday killed at least four people and wounded six, police said.
The blast took place at a petrol station on a highway outside the town of Surab, around 175 kilometers west of the provincial capital, Quetta.
'Four people died on the spot whereas six others suffered multiple shrapnel wounds,' a duty officer said.
The death toll could rise because at least two of the injured were listed in critical condition.
A remote-controlled explosive device was rigged to the car parked at the filling station used by truckers hauling goods from seaports, police said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, and the target of the attack was also not clear.
Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but most impoverished province, has been in the grip of a low-level insurgency for the past several years.
It has seen dozens of attacks by separatists against government forces and infrastructure like railway lines, power pylons and gas pipelines.
They have also targeted other ethnic groups, especially those from the country's richest province, Punjab.
The rebels are seeking greater provincial autonomy and a bigger share of the profits from the region's vast natural resources.
