Islamabad - At least five people were killed and about 15 injured on Thursday when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest rammed his motorbike into a bus in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, located adjacent to the capital Islamabad, police said.
Taliban militants have recently intensified attacks across the country to avenge the ongoing military offensive in Swat and airstrikes in the tribal district of South Waziristan.
'It was apparently a suicide attack which caused the fuel tank of the bus to explode,' the city police chief Nasir Durrani said. 'The motor bike that the terrorist used to attack the bus is totally damaged and his body parts have also been collected from the site.'
'Five to six people died in the bombing while 15 to 16 are injured,' Durrani added.
According to the police chief some seven vehicles were also destroyed in the explosion.
Urdu-language Geo news channel said the bus was carrying the employees of a military-run nuclear facility Kahuta Research Laboratory (KRL).
