Three dead in "accidental" Nepal bomb blast
Sep 6, 2009, 14:51 GMT
Kathmandu - At least three people were killed, including two children, and five others seriously injured when a bomb accidentally went off in western Nepal, the police said Sunday.
Police said the incident happened when a former soldier was showing off an improvised explosive device (IED) used extensively by the Maoists during the communist insurgency to his neighbours when it exploded.
The explosion killed three people, including two children instantly. Five people who were seriously injured were rushed to hospital, the police said.
The explosion happened in Malakheti village in Kailali district, about 400 kilometres west of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, on Sunday evening.
It was not immediately clear why the former soldier was carrying the explosive device.
Nepal has seen growing number of bomb attacks by rebels groups mainly in southern part of the country using IEDs.
Nepalese government recently launched special security drive to seize illegal weapons but has made little progress.
