Earthquake jolts Pakistan, no casualties
Oct 29, 2009, 18:40 GMT
Islamabad - A strong earthquake rattled northern and central Pakistan late Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of damage, officials said.
The earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, was centred in the Hindu Kush mountains, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). It struck the region at 11:44 pm local time (1744 GMT).
There was no immediate word of casualties.
'Since the depth was around 200 kilometres, the tremors are unlikely to cause any significant damage,' PMD Director General Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry said.
A magnitude 6.2 quake had struck northern Pakistan last Friday, killing at least five people.
More than 73,000 people were killed when a massive earthquake hit Pakistan-administered Kashmir and the surrounding region in October 2005.
