Ten Afghan civilians killed suicide bombing attack (Extra)
Nov 19, 2009, 13:20 GMT
Kandahar - Ten civilians, including two children, were killed and 13 others wounded in a suicide bombing near a police station in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, the provincial police chief said.
The suspect was identified as a bomber and shot by Afghan police in Deh Rawod district of southern province of Uruzgan, Provincial Police Chief Juma Gul Hemat told German Press Agency dpa.
'Despite being shot several times, the bomber detonated his explosive-filled vest and killed two children and eight men, all innocent people,' Hemat said, adding that three children were also among the injured in the attack.
The attack took place on Thursday afternoon as a convoy of police were leaving the main police headquarters in the district centre, he said. The force was on its way to take part in a military operation in the Jatu area of the district, he added.
'Of course the attack was the work of Taliban,' Hemat alleged, but did not provide any evidence to prove his assertion.
Taliban militants, who were forced from power in a US military invasion in late 2001, rely heavily on the use of suicide and roadside attacks as part of their insurgency.
