British navy medic marks first with Afghan bravery award
Nov 27, 2009, 15:18 GMT
London - A 21-year-old medic in Britain's Royal Navy was Friday awarded a Military Cross (MC) medal for braving heavy enemy fire to give life-saving treatment to a soldier in Afghanistan.
Kate Nesbitt ran 70 metres through a hail of bullet-and rocket fire to attend to the injured soldier during a fierce battle with Taliban forces in the Marjah district of Helmand province in March.
'I just did what I'm sure everyone else would have done for me,' the petite sailor said after collecting her medal from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. 'It is the proudest day of my life.'
Nesbitt, whose rank is Able Seaman Class 1, is the first woman in the Royal Navy to win the prestigious award and only the second in the British armed forces as a whole.
