India offers 81-million-dollar incentives to wind power companies

New Delhi - The Indian government on Thursday announced incentives of 3.8 billion rupees (81 million dollars) for wind power projects that fed electricity into the national grid.
Wind power producers would be eligible to claim 0.5 rupees per unit fed into the grid for at least four years and a maximum of 10 years with a cap of 6.2 million rupees per megawatt, a statement from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said.
The subsidies would be applicable for projects of up to 4,000 megawatts, the statement said.
India depends heavily on fossil fuels for its energy needs and has been looking at developing renewable energy like solar and wind power to cut down on the carbon emissions from its coal-based power plants and to reduce its oil import bill.
