Canadian, British soldiers killed in blasts in southern Afghanistan
Dec 24, 2009, 9:24 GMT
Kabul - NATO said Thursday that two of its soldiers, a Canadian and a Briton, were killed in roadside blasts in volatile southern Afghanistan.
The British soldier was killed Tuesday in a roadside bombing in Helmand province, taking to 106 the number of British soldiers killed so far this year in Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.
The Canadian soldier died Wednesday in a similar attack in the neighbouring province of Kandahar, it said without providing further details.
More than 500 international soldiers - with more than 410 of them from the United States and Britain - have been killed in the Afghan conflict so far this year, according to ICasualties.org, an independent website that tracks military casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This year has been the deadliest for NATO forces since the ouster of the Taliban regime in late 2001.
More than 110,000 foreign soldiers are currently stationed in Afghanistan. Up to 37,000 additional US and other NATO troops were expected to arrive in the county by summer.
