Two NATO soldiers killed by roadside bomb

Feb 8, 2010, 10:00 GMT

Kabul - Two NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops were killed by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said in a statement Monday.

The incident occurred Sunday, the ISAF statement said, but did not reveal the nationalities of the deceased nor the location.

Most of the ISAF forces stationed in the region are from the US, Britain, Canada and the Netherlands.

Also on Sunday, two Swedish soldiers and an Afghan interpreter were killed in a firefight in northern Balkh province. Another Swedish soldier was wounded when their patrol was attacked by small-arms fire near Mazar-e-Shariff city.

A total of 59 NATO soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to ICasualty.org, an independent website that compiles military casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Roadside bombs have claimed about 90 per cent of this year's military fatalities.

Sunday's bombing took place in the same region, where thousands of Afghan and NATO troops are preparing to soon launch their biggest offensive against Taliban strongholds in Helmand province.
