Feb 9, 2010, 15:06 GMT
Paris - A French soldier was killed Tuesday in Afghanistan, the Defence Ministry said on its web site.
The soldier, who was not identified, died in an attack by suspected Taliban rebels on the Afghan Army convoy he was guarding as it passed through the Alasay Valley, north-east of the capital Kabul.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon offered his 'sincere condolences' to the victim's family, and said the soldier had died while trying 'to re-establish peace and security in Afghanistan.'
The victim is the 39th French soldier to be killed in Afghanistan. France currently has some 3,750 troops deployed in and around the country.
