Identity of captured al-Qaeda operative unclear (Roundup)
Mar 8, 2010, 3:56 GMT
Islamabad/Washington - Pakistani security forces arrested a suspected al-Qaeda figure Sunday in the southern port city of Karachi, media reports said.
The online edition of the newspaper Dawn named the detainee as Adam Gadahn, alias Abu Yahya, a US citizen from California who is on the CIA's 10 most-wanted list.
In Washington, US officials could not confirm that the suspect captured was Gadahn. In a report on its website, the Washington Post cited an 'informed source' as saying that the report of Gadahn's capture was apparently 'bogus.'
Gadahn has acted as a spokesman for al-Qaeda. A close associate of Osama bin Laden, Gadahn was believed to have been living with the al- Qaeda founder after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001.
He was detained in a suburb of Karachi by Pakistani security forces along with help from US intelligence, the Dawn report said.
The CIA had offered a reward of 1 million dollars leading to the arrest of Gadahn.
