Mar 15, 2010, 16:44 GMT
Washington - A Pentagon official is under investigation for allegedly setting up a spying network in Afghanistan and Pakistan by hiring private contractors to find militants, according to a report Monday.
The New York Times, citing military and business officials, reported that Michael Furlong hired security contractors from firms who employed former CIA or special operations soldiers.
The goal was to find militants and provide intelligence on their whereabouts to the US military to to help them kill al-Qaeda Taliban militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The New York Times reported that it is regarded as illegal for the Pentagon to hire private spies. Furlong could face charges of contract fraud or other offenses, the newspaper reported.
