Divorced wife sues Bangladesh's former military dictator
Mar 18, 2010, 15:56 GMT
Dhaka - The divorced wife of Bangladesh's former military ruler Hussein Muhammad Ershad Thursday lodged a lawsuit against the former president demanding 8.6 million dollars as compensation for harming her reputation, court officials said.
Bidisha, who no longer uses her surname and was divorced by the former president in 2005, filed the suit with Dhaka District and Session Judge's court alleging that she was tortured by her former husband.
She claimed that the former president tortured her both physically and mentally from 2005 to 2007, including accusing her of false criminal activities that harmed her social, political and business reputation.
Judge Imrul Quayes accepted the case and ordered the former military general, who assumed power in 1982 after an army coup and stepped down in 1990, to appear before the court on April 20.
A fashion designer, Bidisha was detained by police on charges of sedition immediately after Ershad divorced her.
