Bangladesh captures leader of banned Islamist outfit
May 25, 2010, 12:12 GMT
Dhaka - Bangladeshi police on Tuesday captured the head of a banned militant group at an apartment on the outskirts of the capital, officials said.
Saidur Rahman, the chief of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was arrested two days after other group members were captured, police Inspector General Noor Mohammad said at a press conference.
The head of the JMB's military wing was arrested on Sunday during a raid in Dania, an eastern district of Dhaka, along with two other influential members of the group, Mohammad said.
Eight policemen were injured during the operation, which also recovered explosives and books on jihad, or Islamic holy war, he said.
Saidur has been at the helm of the JMB since its previous leader Shaykh Abdur Rahman was captured and hanged in 2007.
Home Minister Sahara Khatun, visiting the wounded policemen, vowed to eliminate at any cost the terrorist elements still active in the country.
