Indian-American girl champion US speller, with "stromuhr"

Jun 5, 2010, 6:26 GMT

Washington - Anamika Veeramani, 14, Friday correctly spelled the word 'stromuhr' to win the national US spelling bee, the third consecutive Indian-American to capture the top prize.

Veeramani, of the US state of Ohio, kept her nerve through eight rounds in the nationally broadcast finals. In the ninth, she was pitched the German word stromuhr, which describes a widely used medical instrument that measures the amount and speed of blood flowing through arteries.

In the round before that, she knocked out her three competitors - Shantanu Srivatsa, who tripped on 'ochidore'; Elizabeth Platz, who couldn't spell rhytidome; and Adrian Guanawan, who was stumped by 'terribilita.'

Veeramani survived that next-to-last round with the five-letter word, 'juvia.'

The 14-year-old, who will receive more than 40,000 dollars in cash and prizes, has studied Indian classical music for eight years and played the violin for six years, according to her biography on the Scripps National Spelling Bee website.
