Rasmussen: training foreign troops could be NATO mission (Extra)
Jun 11, 2010, 14:22 GMT
Brussels - Training foreign troops in states such as Afghanistan to improve their country's security could be one of the missions NATO takes on in the next decade, the alliance's secretary general said Friday.
NATO is currently struggling to find enough trainers to bring Afghanistan's forces up to strength. The effort is central to the alliance's long-term strategy for bringing its own troops home.
'It's a quite new thing for NATO allies to engage in such training missions ... We have to adapt our alliance to this new task to train and educate local forces in a country like Afghanistan, and I think we will deal with this aspect in the new strategic concept,' Anders Fogh Rasmussen said after talks with NATO defence ministers.
NATO is currently drawing up a new doctrine to cover its development and deployments over the next decade. NATO leaders are expected to finalise the document in November.
'In the long-term perspective, I think it might lead to the conclusion that we need this training capacity as one of the NATO capabilities,' Rasmussen said.
