Rockets fired at South Korean reconstruction team in Afghanistan
Jul 1, 2010, 10:03 GMT
Seoul - Civilians working for the South Korean reconstruction team in Afghanistan were the targets of a rocket attack, the Foreign Ministry in Seoul said Thursday.
No one was hurt when two rockets were fired late Wednesday at a construction site where the South Koreans were building their base camp in Charikar in the northern province of Parwan.
One rocket fell about 200 to 300 metres from the camp, a ministry spokesman said. Where the second rocket hit was not immediately clear.
No one had taken responsibility for the attack.
It took place shortly before the South Korean reconstruction team of about 50 civilians and eight police officers is to officially begin its work.
The workers are eventually to be protected by 240 South Korean soldiers. An initial contingent of 90 was deployed in mid-June in Charikar.
South Korea withdrew about 200 soldiers from Afghanistan at the end of 2007 in return for the Taliban's release of 19 South Korean Christian aid workers who had been taken hostage.
