Report: Indian wrestlers, shot-putter fail dope tests
Sep 3, 2010, 9:47 GMT
New Delhi - Indian authorities suspended four wrestlers and a shot-putter from next month's Commonwealth Games over failed drug tests, a news report said Friday.
The athletes tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine, the Indian Express daily reported quoting National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) officials.
Three male wrestlers, Rajiv Tomar, Sumit, Mausam Khatri, female wrestler Gursharanpreet Kaur and male shot-putter Sourav Vij failed NADA tests carried out on August 8.
Tomar is among India's leading wrestlers who was awarded the Arjuna Award, the nation's top sporting honour. He was considered a gold medal contender for the Commonwealth Games set to take place October 3-14 in New Delhi.
The athletes were provisionally suspended and replacements have been named, the report said.
The five will be given a chance to prepare their defence and a hearing will be conducted into the findings.
It was the second instance of Indian wrestlers being suspended from the national team this year. In January, four wrestlers were asked to leave the team after testing positive for steroids.
