21 killed in India bus crash
Sep 9, 2010, 7:44 GMT
New Delhi - At least 21 people were killed and 41 were rescued when an overcrowded bus fell into a river in India's central state of Madhya Pradesh, a news report said Thursday.
The accident occurred late Wednesday when the bus carrying an estimated 70 passengers slipped into the Bagdi river while trying to cross a flooded bridge in Dewas district around 150 kilometres south-west of state capital Bhopal, the IANS news agency reported.
Senior police official Pawan Jain confirmed the casualties and told IANS that up to five people were still missing.
The driver survived the accident and was arrested on charges of negligent driving.
Injured passengers admitted to a local hospital said the driver was responsible for the accident as he took the bus across the bridge despite the river being in flood.
Government data shows approximately 120,000 people are killed in road crashes each year. Police blame reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles and bad roads for a majority of the accidents.
