Five Afghan policemen, NATO soldier killed in attacks
Oct 21, 2010, 9:54 GMT
Kabul - A NATO soldier was killed Thursday in eastern Afghanistan while five Afghan police forces were killed in a bombing and ambush by suspected Taliban guerillas in the west of the country, officials said.
The foreign soldier died after an insurgent attack, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said without revealing details about the incident or the deceased.
Nearly 600 international soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to iCasualties.org, an independent website that tracks foreign troop deaths in the country. The figure marks the bloodiest year for foreign forces since their deployment after the 2001 ouster of the Taliban regime.
In the western province of Herat on Wednesday, four Afghan police officers were killed and one injured when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle in the Keshk-e-Kuhna district, the Interior Ministry said Thursday.
Another policeman was killed in a suspected Taliban ambush in Herat's Ghoryan district Wednesday, the ministry said. One accused militant was killed and three others detained during the clash, it said.
