Bulgaria boosts Afghanistan deployment despite al-Qaeda threat
Oct 26, 2010, 14:44 GMT
Sofia - Bulgaria plans to send 65 extra soldiers to Afghanistan by December, Defence Minister Anyu Angelov said on Tuesday - days after al-Qaeda threatened the Balkan country due to its involvement in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
Angelov made the announcement in the Bulgarian capital Sofia during a conference held under the slogan 'Europe for Afghanistan.'
United States Ambassador James Warlick called on the Bulgarian government to do more for the war-torn country, even though Angelov described his nation's contribution as already being 'substantial.'
He noted that Bulgaria spends more than 7 per cent of its budget on defence because of its participation in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. Bulgarian currently has 536 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.
