Roadside bombs injure two German soldiers in Afghanistan

Kunduz, Afghanistan(dpa)- Two German soldiers were injured on Sunday when their vehicles struck roadside bombs in northern Afghanistan, an official said.
The incidents occurred in Chardarah, a district in Kunduz province, Abdul Wahid Omerkhil, the district governor, told the German Press Agency dpa.
A military source confirmed the injuries and said the soldiers were on a regular patrol when the bombs went off.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said his group carried out the attacks, claiming that two tanks were destroyed and an unspecified number of soldiers killed.
Chardarah is the most dangerous district in Kunduz, a province which has seen more Taliban activity in the past three years than other areas in the comparatively peaceful northern region.
Separately, two US soldiers were wounded in a gunbattle with Taliban militants in neighboring Baghlan province, Munshi Abdul Majeed, the provincial governor, said Sunday.
There are about 4,500 German troops based in northern Afghanistan. Thousands of US troops were deployed to the region earlier this year to confront growing Taliban activities, far from their traditional power bases in the south and east.
