Plane with 22 on board missing in Nepal (Roundup)
Dec 15, 2010, 15:43 GMT
Kathmandu - Bad weather hampered rescue operations for a plane with 22 people aboard that went missing in Nepal on Wednesday, officials said.
Two rescue helicopters dispatched from Kathmandu to search for the missing aircraft were forced to make an emergency landing because of the weather.
The Twin Otter was carrying 19 passengers and three crew when it disappeared from radar screens five minutes after taking off from Lamidanda Airport in north-eastern Nepal's Khotang district.
At least one foreign citizen was on the Kathmandu-bound aircraft, flight operator Tara Air said. Most of the passengers were returning from a pilgrimage to a Hindu shrine.
Nepal has a poor aviation safety record. In October, a chopper crashed in the Everest region killing two people. In August, 18 people, including six foreigners, were killed when a turboprop plane crashed on its way from Kathmandu to the Everest region.
