Rebel leader linked to Afghan capital bombing killed in airstrike
Dec 23, 2010, 10:53 GMT
Kabul - A Taliban leader accused of involvement in Kabul suicide bombings at the weekend has been killed in a NATO airstrike in central Afghanistan, the alliance said Thursday.
The airstrike killed Abdul Hai and two of his associates Wednesday as they were trying to plant a bomb on a road in the Waghaz district of Ghazni province, NATO said in a statement.
It charged Abdul Hai with involvement in Sunday's double suicide attack on an Afghan National Army bus in Kabul.
Five officers were killed and nine were injured when two bombers targeted their bus on the eastern outskirts of Kabul. The bombing was the first in about six months to strike the capital.
Abdul Hai was also involved in numerous other attacks against Afghan and foreign forces in Ghazni, the statement said.
Also Wednesday, NATO-led international troops killed a fourth militant and detained two others when searching a compound in Waghaz.
The Taliban are widely active in Ghazni, where hundreds of Polish and US troops are deployed as part of 150,000 foreign soldiers based across the country. The militants control at least one district in the province.
