Indian soldier injured in Pakistan firing across Kashmir border
Jan 13, 2011, 7:41 GMT
Srinagar, Kashmir - An Indian soldier was injured when Pakistani troops opened fire across the Line of Control dividing the Kashmir region, defence sources said Thursday.
Pakistani soldiers fired heavy guns and rocket-propelled grenades at Indian forward posts late Wednesday along the Krishnaghati sector of the de-facto border in Jammu and Kashmir state, the sources said.
Indian soldiers returned fire and the exchange continued until early Thursday.
One Indian trooper was injured and admitted to hospital.
This was the second alleged violation in January of a 2003 ceasefire agreement between the two countries which have fought three wars since their independence, two of them over the disputed Kashmir region.
Kashmir is divided into two parts, one administered by India and the other by Pakistan.
India has often accused Pakistan of supporting an armed separatist movement in predominantly Muslim Kashmir and helping militants cross into India-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan has denied the Indian accusations.
