Civilian, foreign soldier, 13 insurgents killed in Afghanistan

Jan 25, 2011, 10:54 GMT

Kabul - A civilian, one foreign soldier and 13 insurgents were killed in Afghanistan in a bombing, airstrikes and a clash, officials said Tuesday.

A soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed Tuesday in a roadside bombing in volatile southern Afghanistan, the alliance said.

It did not release the soldier's nationality or the exact location of the attack.

A civilian was killed Monday night during an operation conducted by Afghan and foreign troops in the northern province of Takhar, said Mullah Mohammed Omar, a district governor.

Five militants were also killed in the operation in the Khoja Ghar district. 'Another civilian and several other insurgents were detained,' the governor said.

The ISAF confirmed the operation, saying a Taliban leader was among several militants killed and several others were detained. It did not mention a civilian death.

In the southern province of Helmand, an airstrike by foreign troops Monday killed six Taliban commanders as they were distributing roadside bombs to other insurgents, the provincial governor's office said.

Two insurgents were killed Monday by an ISAF airstrike in the southern province of Ghazni, the alliance said.

Afghanistan has seen more fighting in recent months than at any other time since a US-led invasion ousted the Taliban regime in 2001.
