Guantanamo detainee dies of natural causes, US says
Feb 4, 2011, 0:06 GMT
Washington - An alleged member of the Taliban held at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp has died of natural causes, the US military said Thursday.
Awal Gul, a 48-year-old Afghan, collapsed in the shower after exercising on an elliptical machine Tuesday and was taken to a naval hospital on the base, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, US Southern Command said.
'After extensive lifesaving measures had been exhausted, the detainee was pronounced dead,' the Miami-based command said.
The Miami Herald newspaper reported Awal Gul suffered a heart attack.
He had been held in the prison at the US naval base on Cuba since October 2002. Southern Command said Awal Gul had admitted to being a Taliban recruiter and commander in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
The command said he associated with al-Qaeda and admitted to meeting with Osama bin Laden.
