UN condemns suicide attack that killed soldiers in Pakistan
Feb 10, 2011, 17:56 GMT
New York - The UN condemned on Thursday the suicide attack carried out by a teenager that killed more than 30 soldiers at an army training centre in Mardan, Pakistan.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was 'appalled by the reported use of a minor to commit this terrorist act.'
He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the government of Pakistan.
The suicide bomber snuck into the army training centre in north- western Pakistan disguised as a schoolboy, officials said. The attack took place at the centre's parade ground in Mardan city in Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province when recruits of the Punjab regimental centre were doing morning exercises.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out to avenge military operations in Malakand, a Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa district adjacent to Mardan district.
