Mar 11, 2011, 8:33 GMT
Islamabad - Pakistan on Friday test-fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Hatf II, which can deliver warheads up to 180 kilometres, the military said.
The missile, also called Abdali, was fired from an undisclosed location.
'Abdali, which can carry strategic and conventional warheads, has surface-to-surface operation capabilities,' said a military spokesman.
The test was witnessed by the chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff Committee, General Khalid Shamim Wynne. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani congratulated the scientists and engineers on their successful launching of the missile.
Pakistan has been developing its arsenal of missiles and tested a medium-range nuclear-capable cruise missile Hatf-VII, also named Babur, with a range of 600-kilometres in February.
Pakistan's missiles are aimed at India, which also has missile systems capable of hitting major Pakistani cities.
Also Friday, India successfully test fired its nuclear-capable Dhanush ballistic missile from a navy ship off its eastern coast, news reports said.
