Three soldiers, six militants killed in Pakistan
Mar 12, 2011, 10:11 GMT
Islamabad - At least two soldiers and six rebels were killed in overnight clashes in Pakistan's volatile north-western tribal regions, officials said on Saturday.
The combat began when militants attacked a military outpost near Kharwanchi village, about 7 kilometres south-west of Ghalijo in Orakzai district.
'We lost two soldiers in the raid but also killed six attackers and injured many others,' an intelligence official who requested anonymity said.
Major Fazulr Rehman, spokesman of the paramilitary Frontier Corps, confirmed the incident but did not give the exact death toll.
'Our troops responded very well to the attack,' Rehman said. 'One security personnel got injured while we are trying to ascertain the casualties suffered by the militants.'
The military launched a major offensive in Orakzai last year and claimed to have regained control of major areas by killing or expelling Taliban fighters.
