Two suicide bombers sole victims in southern Afghanistan
Apr 26, 2011, 8:51 GMT
Kabul - Two suicide bombers were the only victims when they detonated their explosive-packed vests in the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand Tuesday, the provincial government said.
The bombers targeted private security guards escorting a convoy in Gireshk district, the Helmand governor's office said in a statement.
Two security guards were slightly injured, it said.
Elsewhere, NATO-led military forces confirmed on Tuesday that al-Qaeda's number two in eastern Afghanistan had been killed in an operation on April 13.
The insurgent leader was identified as a Saudi Arabian national Abu Hafs al-Najdi, also known as Abdul Ghani, who headed al-Qaeda operations in Kunar and was responsible for coordinating several high-profile attacks in the region, NATO said.
It also said Ghani was a target since at least 2007.
The Haqqani network responsible for attacks on US and NATO forces operates mostly in eastern Afghanistan. The network is said to be closely allied with al-Qaeda remnants in the country.
