Floods and landslides in Sri Lanka kill 8, displace 25,000
May 29, 2011, 10:42 GMT
Colombo - New floods and landslides in Sri Lanka left at least eight persons dead and more than 25,000 displaced in the western and central parts of the country, a spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre said Sunday.
Centre spokesman Pradeep Kodippili said that parts of the western province was the worst affected with one of the main rivers spilling over the banks.
It was the third major flood in the country for this year after more than a million persons were displaced and over 30 killed in two separate floods in the north-central, eastern and central provinces.
The United Nations made an emergency appeal for 51 million dollars to help victims at that time.
