Two bank attackers hanged in Afghanistan
Jun 20, 2011, 10:09 GMT
Kabul - Two assailants who killed 42 people in an attack at a bank in April were hanged to death in Kabul Monday, officials said.
'Two killers who were sentenced to death were hanged at 11 am this morning,' the National Directorate of Security said.
The Supreme Court announced the death penalties for Zar Ajam, a Pakistani national, and his Afghan colleague Matiullah last week. One of their comrades was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
They were part of a group of Taliban assailants that killed at least 42 people, half of them Afghan security forces lining up to receive their salaries, at a bank in eastern Jalalabad city in February. More than 70 others were injured.
Surveillance video footage showed a man dressed in police uniform shooting unarmed civilians.
The body of the Pakistani national will be handed over to the embassy in Kabul, the intelligence office said.
