Weapons hidden by rebels found in northern Sri Lanka hospital
Jul 15, 2011, 11:37 GMT
Colombo - A substantial cache of weapons buried by Tamil separatists was found by the Sri Lankan Army's demining unit in a makeshift hospital in the north of the country, a military spokesman said Friday.
A total of 115 T-56 automatic weapons, a stock of spare parts and other military hardware were recovered from a makeshift hospital located in a school in Vallipurma, 340 kilometres northeast of the capital Colombo.
The hospital was reportedly marked with a Red Cross logo and was used by the rebels in the final stages of fighting with government troops as the 26-year conflict ended in May 2009.
Areas of northern Sri Lanka were once held by the Tamil rebels.
An estimated 40,000 civilians were killed as government forces moved into the north in 2009 to defeat the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam separatists.
While the fighting ended more than two years ago, government troops and deminers continue to recover weapons left behind or hidden by the rebels.
