Italian soldier killed in Afghanistan
Jul 25, 2011, 9:58 GMT
Rome - An Italian soldier was killed Monday and two others were injured in an attack by insurgents in north-western Afghanistan, officials said.
The attack took place near the village of Bala Murghab.
The dead soldier, paratrooper David Tobini, had turned 28 years-old two days before his death.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said the Italian government was 'close' to the families of the casualties.
'We renew the gratitude of the government and the whole country to all our soldiers involved in peace missions against terrorism,' Berlusconi said in a statement.
The killing brings to 41 the number of Italian soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2003, when Italy began deploying its troops in the country as part of the NATO mission.
Berlusconi's junior partner in government, the Northern League party, has recently stepped up its calls for a reduction of Italian troops deployed abroad, including those in Afghanistan.
