Nepal-politics/ Ethnic group strike in eastern Nepal to demand constitution
Aug 7, 2011, 6:09 GMT
Kathmandu - Transport services came to a halt in eastern Nepal Sunday as an ethnic group called a general strike demand a new constitution.
The Limbuwan Regional Council enforced the strike in nine districts to press their claim for an autonomous Limbuwan state.
Hundreds of travellers were stranded on the Mechi Highway and adjoining roads.
Political bickering has prevented the the drafting of a new national charter for three years.
A new constitution was a condition of a 2006 peace agreement that ended a decade of conflict between Maoist rebels and the government.
The Constituent Assembly was elected in 2008 but little progress has been made. The intractable issue is what to do with the former guerrillas confined to camps since the civil war ended.
