Pakistan's monsoon floods has killed 80, affects over 2 million
Sep 4, 2011, 12:22 GMT
Islamabad - The death toll in monsoon flooding in southern Pakistan stood at 80 and the number of people affected at over 2 million, officials said Sunday.
'So far 80 people have been killed due to rains and floods in Sindh province, which started last Saturday,' Asif Jameel of Provincial Disaster Management Authority told German Press Agency dpa.
'We are bracing to cope with more floods,' he said in a telephone interview. Weather forecasters have predicted further rains.
According to authorities, 247,848 homes have been destroyed and more than 25,000 hectares of cotton, sugarcane and rice crops destroyed.
National Disaster Management Authority spokesman Ahmed Kamal said 89,502 of the 2 million people affected by the flooding were being housed in relief camps.
The flooding comes as the millions of people in the rural areas of Sindh are trying to recover from the destruction caused by Pakistan's worst floods last year, which killed more than 2,000 people and displaced over 18 million.
