Three shot dead by police in southern India
Sep 11, 2011, 13:06 GMT
New Delhi - At least three protestors were killed in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu after police opened fire at a demonstration, news reports said.
Over a dozen policemen were injured in Ramanathapuram district when Dalits (members of India's so-called lower castes) pelted police with stones, the NDTV network reported. Some police vehicles were also set ablaze.
The protests, which were triggered by reports that a Dalit leader had been detained by police, also spread from to neighbouring areas later Sunday. Two people were injured in a clash with police in the adjoining Madurai district.
Police said they had sought additional reinforcements to quell the violence in the region.
