US puts Indian Mujahideen on terrorist list
Sep 15, 2011, 18:42 GMT
Washington - The United States on Thursday designated the Indian Mujahideen as a terrorist group, the State Department said.
The group has close ties to terrorist groups in Pakistan, including Lashkar e-Tayyiba, and attacks non-Muslim targets with the goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate across the region, the department said.
It has carried out a number of bombings in India since 2005 that have killed hundreds, and most recently claimed responsibility for a bombing at a New Delhi court last week.
Indian police have not yet determined who is responsible for the attack, for which a Pakistan-based group Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) has also claimed responsibility.
