Eight dead in Bangladesh boat capsize
Sep 28, 2011, 14:39 GMT
Dhaka - At least seven children and one adult died Wednesday in Bangladesh's north-eastern Sunamganj district when an overcrowded motorboat capsized in a river, officials said.
Rescuers retrieved eight bodies from Surma River after a small boat carrying more than 50 passengers overturned at Jamalganj, some 380 kilometres from Dhaka, chief district administrator Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury told dpa by telephone.
The boat sank because it was overcrowded, he said, adding that around 20 more people were still reported as missing.
Rescuers salvaged the motorboat, which was operating without an official permission to ferry people around the region.
