US wants Pakistan to act against Haqqani network
Sep 28, 2011, 23:22 GMT
Washington - The US government renewed calls Wednesday for Pakistan to act against the radical Islamist Haqqani network.
'The continuing safe havens that the Haqqani network enjoys in Pakistan and the links between the Pakistani military and the Haqqani network are troubling, and we want action taken against them,' White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
Last week, the top-ranking US military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, accused Pakistani intelligence of being involved in a terrorist attack against the US embassy in Kabul earlier this month and said the 'the Haqqani network, for one, acts as a veritable arm of Pakistan's internal services intelligence agency.'
US media have reported that the Haqqani group could soon be designated as a terrorist group by the US government.
Carney stressed however the importance of US-Pakistani relations. Tensions have increased following Mullen's remarks, but were already strained since the US raid that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan earlier this year.
