Afghan handover by 2014 will work to plan, British general says
Oct 7, 2011, 9:27 GMT
London - Stabilizing Afghanistan by the targeted handover date of 2014 is 'do-able,' a former British commander of ISAF forces has said.
General David Richards, now Chief of the Defence Staff in Britain, said in a TV interview late Thursday that the NATO-led coalition had plans in place to ensure that Afghanistan would not again become a base for the al-Quaeda terrorist network.
'I think we've got to be clear that we're not talking about creating a Switzerland in that part of the world,' said Richards.
'We're talking about a country that can look after itself. The reason it's important to us is because a stable Afghanistan is vital to our own long-term security. I think it is do-able.'
